Australia will enter their fifth game of the Cricket World Cup as red-hot favourites as they take on Sri Lanka at The Oval in London. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).
On the surface, it really looks like the only thing which might stop the Aussies here is their only silly cricket or any potential weather, although the forecast is pretty good.
While they have been a long way from their best and still have to play most of the top teams at the back end of the World Cup, Australia come in with three wins in their last four games, having messily held on against Pakistan a handful of days ago.
They will also be looking forward to some longer turnarounds between matches after this one, and could look to put the cleaners right through Sri Lanka, who haven’t played any cricket in over a week thanks to the weather.
Australia, besides beating Pakistan, have also gone past the West Indies and Afghanistan, while their only loss came against India on Sunday.
Once again, Australia will be without the injured Marcus Stoinis, who is yet to be formally replaced in the squad, despite the fact Mitchell Marsh has flown over.
It means they could be relying on Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch to squeeze out ten overs between them once again, which is a problem, however, may not be against a side like Sri Lanka.
The Lankans fell heavily to Australia in a warm-up game, and while they did manage to get the better of Afghanistan earlier in the tournament, they will need to improve heavily if they want to compete with Australia.
Realistically, the more relevant game to get a feel on how Sri Lanka go against pace is their opener, when they were bundled out by New Zealand for under 150.
Their top order just doesn’t handle it, and their attack, still led by ageing warrior Lasith Malinga, shouldn’t have the penetration to go through Australia, unless the pitch takes spin and they pick up some early poles that way.
Prediction
Australia should win, and win heavily here. There really are no excuses at this point for turning anything other than a complete performance.
Australia comfortably.
