The BBL is up and running for another year and we have a feast of T20 cricket coming our way. Tonight, the Sydney Sixers take on the Melbourne Renegades at Blundstone Arena in Hobart. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:15pm (AEDT).

Normal services resume close to Christmas when all teams return to their traditional home grounds. However, for the first fortnight, with COVID still raising its ugly head from time to time, the BBL is based in Tasmania and the ACT. That’s why this game is at Blundstone.

The defending champions lost their way on Thursday night against the Hurricanes. At 1-118 with more than six overs to come, Jack Edwards and James Vince brought the Sixers within striking distance of Hobart’s 178. However, a steady flow of wickets saw them fall short.

The loss of Tom Curran to bubble fatigue has hurt the Sixers this year. However, Sean Abbott, Moises Henriques, Jackson Bird and Jason Holder will all join the squad shortly, suggesting that they will be in the semi-final mix.

Sixers fans will also be hoping that Josh Philippe gets among the runs. If he does, the Renegades will be chasing a big total.

The Renegades have made some big changes to their squad after their wooden spoon finish last season.

Josh Lalor and James Pattinson (both formerly Brisbane Heat) join the squad, as do South African imports Imran Tahir and Rilee Rossouw.

Their best 11 should be more competitive.

As per last year however, their batting will be largely dependent on Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh. If they can post some scores, the likes of Sam Harper and Beau Webster will be able to play with more freedom.

Tipping early in the season is fraught with danger but it’s hard to go past the Sixers here.

James Vince is showing early season form and with Josh Philippe to bounce back, the Sixers are capable of posting a big score.

I think that will prove enough.

Sixers by 20 runs or four wickets.
