Both the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades have had middling starts to their BBL campaigns, and after eight matches both teams remain in a sudden death position at eight points apiece. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:15pm (AEDT).
The Sixers find themselves in third place due to their net run rate being marginally better than the Renegades by a mere 0.59, showing that there really isn’t much separating both teams so far.
If we were to disregard the net run-rate entirely, at this point of the competition the Thunder, Sixers, Strikers and Renegades are all effectively in second place which means this tournament is still anybody’s for the taking.
All the more exciting for the viewers as it makes tonight’s clash between the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades a compelling game to watch.
After a confident start, the Melbourne Renegades have somewhat fallen away in their campaign, with three consecutive losses coming after a closely fought victory against the Adelaide Strikers in the sixth game of this BBL edition at the Adelaide Oval.
In that match, the experienced duo of Mohammad Nabi and Dan Christian forged an explosive 94 run partnership to lift their side over the line in their chase of 176, after teetering at 5 for 82. How the Renegades will be wishing for them to fire again in this encounter.
The last time these two teams locked horns, the Sixers decimated the Renegades at Marvel Stadium, the latter’s home turf.
After posting a below-par score of 132, a combined bowling effort by Steven O’Keefe, English import Tom Curran and Sean Abbott stifled the home team to a paltry 9 for 99, making this one of the Renegades’ most humiliating losses to the Sixers.
There’s no doubt the Sixers hold the psychological advantage going into this second clash at the SCG, and with the added home crowd support, they should be marked favourites going into this battle.
The Renegades need to find a way to blunt the ever-accurate left-arm spin of Steven O’Keefe, who is currently the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, to have a chance of overcoming the Sixers in this must-win game.
Prediction
The Sixers’ bowling attack is well-balanced and packed with experience, making them difficult to score off if you’ve already lost a couple of wickets. I expect another hammering from the Sixers yet again, however if Mohammad Nabi, Dan Christian or Cameron White can get going for the Renegades then it will truly be game on!
