The Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers will be looking to kick their BBL|09 campaigns off on the right foot when they clash at the SCG tonight. Join The Roar for live scores and updates throughout the game from 7:10pm (AEDT).
The Sixers will be ruing their semi-final loss to eventual champions the Melbourne Renegades last season, and will be keen to bounce back this time around.
They come into BBL|09 having gained Englishman James Vince in the second half of last season, who joins countryman Tom Curran. Jackson Bird also makes his return to the side after a little stint at the Melbourne Stars.
Coach Greg Shippard will feel pretty confident with the experience he has in his side, which includes the likes of Sean Abbott, Moises Henriques and Peter Nevill.
On top of that, they also have national stars Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith, who they’ll hope will be available for a couple of games later in the campaign.
The Perth Scorchers come off a season they’d like to forget, in which they finished bottom of the league with four wins and ten losses.
They head into BBL|09 having lost Michael Klinger (retirement, now coach of the Renegades), Shaun Marsh (Renegades), and Nathan Coulter-Nile and Hilton Cartwright (both Stars).
While they’ve lost some handy players, they’ve managed to secure the signing of spinner Fawad Ahmed from the Sydney Thunder, who picked up 13 wickets in BBL|08. They’ve also gained Kurtis Patterson (Thunder), as well as two promising English imports in Liam Livingstone and Chris Jordan.
Prediction
Opening games of a new season are always hard to predict. While the Sixers have a strong squad, the Scorchers come in with a clean slate and a host of fresh and hungry new players.Perth to start their campaign with a win away from home.
