The BBL continues this afternoon with the first match of a double-header when the Sydney Thunder take on the Melbourne Stars at Sydney Showground Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary of the match starting at 3.40pm AEDT.
Both these teams get a chance to solidify their place in the top four this afternoon, with the winner to hold top spot at this stage of the BBL.
The Sydney Thunder have been the surprise packet of the BBL season so far, with very view predicting they would be sitting on top of the ladder. In fact their only loss so far was to the Sydney Sixers in a super over thriller.
They are heavily dependent on their top three of Alex Hales, Usman Khawaja and Callum Ferguson, with Ferguson wearing the yellow cap, for batting aggregate at the time of writing. Alex Ross and Chris Morris have done all right with limited opportunities, but the Thunder have a long tail.
On the bowling side we knew what we would get with Chris Green and Arjun Nair. However, Daniel Sams has been a big improver with the ball, taking nine wickets during the BBL so far, just two fewer than injured bowling aggregate leader Sean Abbott.
The Melbourne Stars have lived up to their favourites tag in the BBL so far, with three wins from four starts, the last in a rain-affected match against the Hobart Hurricanes.
They have the team with the most hitting potential in the tournament, with Nic Maddinson, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell all having the capacity to deliver matchwinning performances.
Dale Steyn adds an extra dimension to their attack, with Adam Zampa also enjoying a good season. Nathan Coulter-Nile is also enjoying his change in scenery.
Prediction
Despite their place at the top of the ladder, many think it will be a short-lived proposition for the Thunder. This game gives them a chance to prove the doubters wrong. Back home at Sydney Showground in front of a big holiday crowd, I think the Thunder may just sneak home.
Sydney Thunder to win by ten runs or three wickets.
