Day 2 summary:

England have put themselves into a commanding position at the end of Day 2 of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, batting through the second day’s play for the loss of just four wickets against Australia.

The tourists didn’t have the same conditions with the ball that England had yesterday, struggling to get much swing or assistance from the pitch.

England were slow with the bat, but worked through the day as Rory Burns past 100 and ended 125 not out, as well as a Joe Root half century, combined with a strong contribution from the not out Ben Stokes to be just 17 runs behind at stumps.

Australia got a couple of wickets after tea and looked to be fighting their way back into the game, but they have a heap of work to do early on Day 3 now if they harbour any intentions of winning the first Test in the 2019 Ashes.

Score
Australia 1st innings: 10/284 (80.4)
England 1st innings: 4/267 (90)

Day 2 preview:

A heoric performance from Steve Smith has left the first Ashes Test just about level after the opening day, but the first session of Day 2 could be make or break time for both Australia and England. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEST).

The Australians looked down and out throughout the first half of the day, sitting at 8 for 122 at one point following a top order collapse, and another following the departure of Travis Head, who had dug in for 35.

The former skipper Smith finally found some willing partners in Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon though, with the last two partnerships putting on 152, Smith ending on 144 when he was the final man out.

Australia would end up on 274, but it still appears short of par on a pitch that, while moving around and providing the odd bit of variable bounce, wasn’t anything like that was expected.

The dryness of it and Australia being able to bowl in the fourth innings with Nathan Lyon will be a major advantage given Moeen Ali was getting turn and bounce on Day 1, but England can really put themselves ahead of the game today.

As mentioned though, they will have to bat last and chase runs, so racking up a big first innings lead and batting into Day 3 is an absolute must.

England also clearly need to bat time, given James Anderson has been injured and the amount of work Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes had to get through yesterday. They bowled excellently early, but clearly faded into the second half of the day as Joe Root pushed his two quicks as far as they would go.

Jason Roy and Rory Burns looked solid in knocking the first ten runs off yesterday, but Australia didn’t bowl all that well.

They must find ways to bowl on consistently good lengths like Broad and Woakes did yesterday during the first session and pick up wickets in what will be a low-scoring match on a pitch where every single run is going to be critical.

Knocking over the openers and getting Joe Root in early will be important for Australia. He is the glue to this English batting order, and chasing a score that’s well over what England would have expected to chase, he will be even more vital in building a platform for the explosive middle order to bat behind.

The weather forecast for Day 2 is good, but both team might be keen to push the game along, given things aren’t looking all that good for Day 4 and 5.
