England will be looking to build a big first innings lead against Australia today, as they resume 4/267 at Edgbaston. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).
The game was very much in the balance heading into Day 2, as England were 0/10, looking to chase down Australia’s first innings total of 284.
The day started well for Australia, as James Pattinson removed Jason Roy fairly early, which gave Tim Paine’s side the perfect start.
However, that was about as good as it got for the tourists, as England piled on the pain. Joe Root compiled a classy 57 from 119 balls, but a brilliant effort from Peter Siddle off his own bowling dismissed the English captain.
Joe Denly could only add 18, as Pattinson trapped him lbw. Jos Buttler quickly followed, as Pat Cummins found his outside edge, which saw the danger man dismissed for five.
It was Rory Burns though who has been the difference between the two sides thus far, as the opener finished the day 125 not out.
Burns put together an innings which many of the Australian batsmen could learn a thing or two from. There was nothing flashy about the innings, but he showed a fighting spirit, which allowed him to get through the tough spells of bowling.
Ben Stokes is also 38 not out, which will no doubt concern Paine’s side. Day 3 really could be the turning point for this particular Test match.
England are clearly going to take the lead, but if Australia can get a few early wickets, it keeps them in the contest.
If Australia do not take a wicket or two early, England are going to compile quite a first-innings lead, and it will be decisive in terms of who wins this Test.
Pattinson does look Australia’s biggest threat with the ball, so he will need to have a big day. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).
