England will be looking to level the 2019 Ashes series at 1-1 when they face a vulnerable Australia at Headingley. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the opening day of the third Test, starting from 8pm (AEST).

The second Test, which took place at Lord’s, has ultimately changed the dynamic of this Ashes series.

The ended in a draw due to the weather across the five days, but the damage inflicted by debutant Jofra Archer may well have shifted the momentum back in England’s favour.

Archer’s bouncer that floored Steve Smith in Australia’s first innings was horrific, and it ultimately led to Smith being ruled out of the remainder of the match with concussion.

Marnus Labuschagne came into the XI as Test cricket’s first-ever concussion substitute.

Tim Paine will be grateful that rule was introduced, as Labuschagne was required to bat in Australia’s second innings, ultimately securing a draw for his nation.

He was also floored by an Archer bouncer, but showed determination and made a superb 59.

Will Archer be as threatening at Headingley as he was at Lord’s? Only time will tell.

England have added Ollie Pope to the squad for the third Test, as he is cover for Jason Roy, who took a blow to the neck at training on Tuesday, but he passed the concussion test at the time. He will still be monitored until the toss of the coin at Headingley.

It is highly likely that Joe Root will pick the exact same XI that took to the field at Lord’s, which means Sam Curran will be the man to miss out again.

As for Australia, due to the short turnaround between Lord’s and Headingley, Smith has been ruled out of the third Test with concussion.

Prediction
Australia have claimed victory at Headingley in four of their last five visits.

However, unlike Lord’s, there is very little rain expected.

With that being the case, and Australia being forced to rest Smith due to concussion, England should claim victory.

England to level the series at 1-1.
