Australia will resume 3/170 to begin the second day of the fourth Test of the 2019 Ashes series. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 2, starting from 8pm (AEST).
Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bat on Day 1, which was the correct decision, as the wicket looked very flat.
However, David Warner was dismissed for a duck to begin the match. The opener went to leave the delivery from Stuart Broad, but the ball caught the toe of his bat, and Jonny Bairstow took the catch.
Marcus Harris shortly followed, as Broad trapped him LBW, which saw the opener depart for 13.
Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith came together with the score 2/28, but they were able to steady the ship, as they both got to lunch with the score 2/98.
Just as the second session was about to get underway, the rain hit Manchester, which caused a delay in play.
After a lengthy delay, play did resume. Labuschagne brought up his half-century, and then the rain came back.
However, it was a very short delay, which allowed Smith to also bring up his half-century.
Once Smith reached that milestone, Labuschagne was dismissed shortly after for 67, as he was bowled by Craig Overton. The partnership Labuschagne and Smith put on was worth 117 runs.
Travis Head came to the crease and he was able to get through to tea with Smith. Australia went into the break 3/170.
The rain returned just as the final session of the day was about to get underway, and it ultimately ended the opening day of the fourth Test.
Smith (60 not out) and Head (18 not out) will both be looking to make big runs on Day 2, to ultimately put their nation in control of the match.
There is also a bit of rain around on the second day, but we will see some play. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 2, starting from 8pm (AEST).
