England’s first innings will resume at 1/23 at Old Trafford on the third day of the fourth Ashes Test match of the 2019 series. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).
On Day 2, Australia’s first innings resumed at 3/170, with Steve Smith (60 not out) and Travis Head (18 not out) the two batsmen at the crease.
Smith hit a couple of early boundaries, but Head could not do the same, as he was dismissed for 19. Stuart Broad trapped Head lbw, which brought Matthew Wade to the crease.
Wade did not last long, either, as he was dismissed for 16. Wade looked to go large against Jack Leach, but he skied the ball, and Joe Root took the catch at mid-on.
Tim Paine joined Smith at the crease, and the Australian captain helped Smith get to another Test century just before the lunch break. Australia went into the main break 5/245.
Once play resumed after lunch, England thought they had Smith very early, as Leach found his outside edge, and Ben Stokes took the catch at first slip.
However, Leach overstepped, which meant Smith survived due to the no-ball. That ultimately led to Smith reaching 150.
Paine reached a milestone of his own in the second session, also, as he reached his first half-century of the series. However, he was dropped twice throughout the middle session.
Both Smith and Paine were able to get through till tea, with the score 5/369.
However, straight after the tea break, Paine was dismissed first ball of the session for 58, as Craig Overton found his outside edge, and Jonny Bairstow took the catch.
Pat Cummins came to the crease, but he was dismissed quickly for four, as Leach found the outside edge of his bat, and Stokes took the catch at first slip.
Despite losing a couple of wickets early in the session, it did not stop Smith from getting to his double-century.
Smith was eventually dismissed by Root for 211, as he was caught by Joe Denly going for the reverse sweep.
Mitchell Starc piled on the pain for England, as he compiled an unbeaten 54 runs from 58 deliveries. Nathan Lyon also chipped in with an unbeaten 26. Paine declared with Australia’s first innings total at 8/497.
Rory Burns and Denly were given the task of batting 10 overs before stumps. However, Denly could not survive, as he was dismissed by Cummins for four. The opener was caught at short leg by Wade.
Overton came in as nightwatchman, and he, alongside Burns, survived until the end of the day. England are currently 1/23.
Burns (15 not out) and Overton (three not out) have a huge task on Day 3, as England still trail by 474 runs. Rain will have an impact on the day, according to reports. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).
