England’s second innings will resume at 8/313 against Australia on the fourth day of the fifth Test of the 2019 Ashes series. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the events at The Oval, starting from 8pm (AEST).

England’s second innings resumed at 0/9 on Day 3, as they were looking to build on the 78-run lead they had gained over Australia.

Joe Denly (one not out) and Rory Burns (four not out) were the two batsmen at the crease to begin the day, and they really did set the tone for their side.

There was a positive intent from both the openers, but despite the solid start, Burns was dismissed by Nathan Lyon for 20, as he tried to cut a short ball, and Tim Paine took the catch.

Lyon then picked up another scalp, as Joe Root was caught by Steve Smith at first slip. The England captain departed for 21.

England went into lunch at 2/88. When play resumed, Ben Stokes and Denly piled on the pain for Australia. Stokes was dropped fairly early on in his innings by Smith, as Lyon was able to find his outside edge.

Denly shortly after brought up his half-century, and Stokes then went on to do the same. England went into tea at 2/193.

When play resumed, Stokes was bowled by a beauty from Lyon, which saw the all-rounder dismissed for 67.

Peter Siddle then got in on the act, as he found the outside edge of Denly’s bat, and the catch was taken at first slip by Smith. The opener departed for 94.

Jonny Bairstow fell the same way for 14, except Mitchell Marsh was the bowler.

When 80 overs had been bowled, the new ball was taken, and it worked straight away. Sam Curran was caught for 17 by Paine down the leg side off the bowling of Pat Cummins.

Chris Woakes then came to the crease, but he was dismissed by Marsh for six, as Smith took a blinder in the cordon.

Jos Buttler had batted well throughout the final session, however, he fell to the shorter delivery from Siddle, and Marnus Labuschagne took a good catch out in the deep. Buttler departed for 47.

Jofra Archer (three not out) and Jack Leach (five not out) got through until the end of the day. England are currently 8/313, with a total lead of 382.

With still two days to play, it appears that England will bat for as long as they can, and build on the lead they have managed to produce.

The weather is good for the next two days in London, also. It will take a miracle for Australia to get anything out of this game. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 4, starting from 8pm (AEST).
