Steve Waugh defends David Warner, Cameron Bancroft as opening woes continue

Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has defended David Warner and Cameron Bancroft amid the two returning openers’ struggles to start the Ashes series.

After compiling just 10 runs across both innings at Edgbaston for his worst total return in an Ashes Test, Warner’s woes continued in the first innings at Lord’s with the left-hander bowled by a peach from Stuart Broad for just three – the third time he has been dismissed by Broad this series.

Meanwhile, Bancroft has also found the going tough, scoring just 28 runs from his three innings.

However Waugh, who has been working with the Australian camp as a mentor during the Ashes series, believes both players can turn their luck around.

They’ll need to, with Marcus Harris waiting in the wings, having cracked 67 in Australia’s tour match against Worcestershire last week.
