Sydney FC and the Newcastle Jets meet at Allianz Stadium in what should be a compelling A-League clash. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEDT).

This is the match-up many have been waiting for in recent weeks as the ladder leaders take on the Jets in Sydney. Coming off their best half of football of the season in their second-half clinic against Perth, Sydney have few injury troubles and a squad rolling along confidently.

Newcastle come in off a tough loss to the Victory last week. There’s no shame there and they will look to rebound and continue their chase of Sydney FC on the ladder, who now sit eight points clear.

With Victory, City and Adelaide breathing down their necks, the boys from the Hunter will want to take something from this game to protect their position and set up for a run home that sees them keep second position on the ladder.

The frantic style of Ernie Merrick as his attackers’ launch wave after wave into the opposition box will be tested against the best defence in the League and Graham Arnold will have his men switched on once again; ready to combat the likes of Dimi Petratos and Andrew Nabbout.

Adrian Mierzejewski and Milos Ninkovic are scaring all-comers at the moment by doing the unthinkable and combining well, despite fears they might crowd each other. That is a scary proposition for any team and the sky blues will look to create an eleven point lead at the top of the ladder.

This could be the game of the week and despite sensing a draw, it is too difficult to tip against Sydney in the form they are currently displaying.

What a great game and great night.
Still recovering after an all night drinking session with some of the Jets fans at the Captain Cook.
At least we won the pool comp.

Well played Jets and Merrick, who came up with the right tactics to keep Sydney pretty well held and managed to score in the penalty area ruckus and melees.

Jets are a chance to go all the way for the GTS if they can repeat that dose in the big one, although Sydney have the big match experience, attacked them in the final minutes and if it went to extra time would have probably won.

A-League ain’t so bad after all.
Looking forward to the next game now.

Great game. Newcastle’s pressing and counter-attacking were stunning. Exhausting to watch.

Ninkovic’s goal was also a stunner.

Well done jets despite your injuries, you took it to the champions & deserved a draw.

Credit where due. A few weeks ago, I thought Jets were chokers on the big stage, but tonight they were superb. Right from kick off.

They should’ve buried Sydney FC in the 1st half.
Syd should’ve buried a few in the 2nd half.

2-2 result perfect for the neutrals.

Jets are definitely the real deal. When you look at the players who will walk back into the Jets XI in the next month or so, you realise the team that Sydney couldn’t beat today was half the Jets’ reserve team. I think Sydney was missing 1 regular starting player.

Kanga with your 3 goal start I guess that’s a moral victory for the Jets.
Good stuff, support your team, they are a big chance now.

If you ever wondered why Australians love football, the match between Sydney FC and the Newcastle Jets tonight could potentially have explained why so may do.
In a clash between the top two teams on the table, the kitchen sinks were thrown in either direction as the teams sought psychological advantage over the other heading into the second half of the season.
Despite Sydney FC taking all before them throughout the opening three months of the season, Newcastle had been the closest to matching their point production and were seeking a shock result at Allianz.
They achieved the first part of the puzzle when Andrew Nabbout found the net in the first half and if not for the astonishing goal from Milos Ninkovic to level things up, should have led at half-time.
The majority of the football world probably thought Sydney would rally in the second period, however, it was Joey Champness who slotted home the next goal of the game and Newcastle looked the likely winners.
Sydney, being the champions that they are, started to pressure the visitors with everything they had and eventually the dam wall broke when Bobo levelled the scores.
Neither team could break the deadlock after the goal and some might suggest that it was apt, in one of the best games we have seen in the A-League this season.
A great crowd witnessed a wonderful game and the competition hots up as a result. Well played to both clubs
