Just seven days after Lewis Hamilton’s triumph over Max Verstappen at Portimão, Formula One finds itself across the border in Spain and at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the next chapter of this 2021 world championship for the Spanish Grand Prix. Join The Roar for live blog coverage from 10:50 pm AEST.

Verstappen, who was left without an answer to the pace of the Mercedes and Hamilton, remarked after Portugal that he couldn’t wait to get to the Spanish Grand Prix – the scene of his first win back in 2016.

That was also the only race in the hybrid-turbo era not won by Mercedes, who boast six out of seven victories since 2014 in Barcelona, including four consecutive thanks to Hamilton in the last four years.

The 4.6 km circuit produces some spectacular lap times, though when it comes to the 66-lap grand prix, overtaking is difficult with the current generation of car and spec of aerodynamics.

Thus making pole position quite crucial and it was a special one for Hamilton, who became the first driver to notch up a century of poles. A fine margin of 0.036 seconds separated the seven-time champion from Verstappen.

The run into Turn 1 could determine who leads the race, between any of the two starting from the front row of the grid – as Verstappen will be eager to even the winner’s ledger come the end of Sunday.

Red Bull may face some difficulties in terms of strategy unless Sergio Perez from eighth can make a strong start and catch his teammate early in the piece. Though with both Ferraris, Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo all eager to cash in on points, it’ll require getting the elbows out, which Checo is known to do.

Again, the limited overtaking opportunities will require some more creativity from the drivers to execute a pass. The pit-straight with DRS and the run into Turn 1 seems to be the likely passing spot at this track.

2021 also marked the return of Fernando Alonso to Formula One and the former Spanish Grand Prix race winner will be eyeing a strong result on home soil, with the recent upturn in form for Alpine and starting tenth.

Can Verstappen and Red Bull reign in Spain and end Hamilton’s stranglehold of the Spanish Grand Prix? Tune in for live blog coverage on The Roar from 10:50 pm AEST for all the action from Barcelona.
