After a wonderful week in the pool it all comes to an end today with the last five gold medals for swimming to be decided at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 1500m men’s race is on the schedule and it holds a special place in Australian hearts with the likes of Kieran Perkins, Grant Hackett and Daniel Kowalski providing so many great memories for Aussies in the 90s and 2000s.

It’s been a tougher time for Australians in the event in recent times and it’s Florian Wellbrook who is the favourite to take out this title.

It’s a nice mix of speed and endurance for the swimming events with the 50m finals also to be contested in both men’s and women’s.

Elsewhere, the other big event today is of course one of the most-watched events at any Olympic Games to crown the fastest human on the planet – the men’s 100m sprint.

The USA will be the favourites in the event with Trayvon Bromell and Ronnie Baker leading the charge.

Australia has extra interest in the race after the heroics of Rohan Browning who did a PB of 10.01 to reach the semi-final. If he can match that again he’s a chance to make the final.

It’s a big day for Australian teams with the Kookaburras in action in the quarterfinals while the Australian women’s water polo team plays South Africa tonight.
