WATCH: Referee howler and awful luck costs the Matildas a spot in Olympics final
The Matildas will play off for a bronze medal against the United State of America after being defeated 1-0 by Sweden in the semi-final at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Aussie team had a horror five minutes when a clear goal by Sam Kerr was disallowed in the 42nd minute which was followed by a goal to Sweden just before halftime in very unfortunate circumstances.
The ball pinballing around the penalty box after rebounding from a Teegan Micah save and falling back fortuitously to Sweden.
It was the disallowed goal though that will hurt most as it was a momentum killer which was compounded by Sweden’s goal.
