Race preview:

The third running of The Everest takes place at Royal Randwick, with A$14 million up for grabs. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:15pm (AEDT).

While much of the racing action taking place at Caufield throughout the day has potentially more impact and importance to the future of Australian racing and the Spring Carnival itself, nothing can match the buzz at Royal Randwick, the money on offer and the glamour of the Everest.

A $6.05 million awaits the winner of the third edition of the new weight for age sprint, with a unique structure and one that has built an astronomical level of excitement in punters and fans of the industry.

After a solid run of warm and dry weather, the race will be a far different one to last year’s edition where Redzel dominated in heavy conditions.

It will be fancy hats and suits at ten paces today in the brilliant Randwick sunshine and the two-time reigning champ will find it tough to complete the three-peat.

Pierata and Santa Ana Lane appear to be the logical choices yet Trekking, Classique Legend, Alizee and Sunlight also have strong claims.

Irish representative Ten Sovereigns is not here for a haircut and could be the surprise runner. Lurking will be Redzel, searching for another huge pay day.

Chris Waller’s Arcadia Queen will be thundering home and with the Midas touch of the nation’s most successful trainer, the Western Australia runner could produce a result that will silence any remaining doubters.

Prediction
This is a tough race to line up, with early speed, luck and positioning crucial. Santa Ana Lane will be flashing home, potentially needing to run down Pierata and Trekking is in excellent form after its win last Saturday in the Schillaci Stakes.

1. Santa Ana Lane
2. Pierata
3. Trekking
