Bruce McAvaney's passionate call for action after horse racing expose

Iconic sport broadcaster Bruce McAveney has made a passionate plea for the racing industry to take “immediate action” following its latest scandal.

An ABC report uncovered the extensive destruction of retired racehorses at abattoirs and knackeries in Queensland and New South Wales for human consumption and pet food.

The shocking footage of the treatment of the horses has since sparked outcry.

Under Racing NSW policy, racehorses are supposed to be rehomed upon retirement.

Addressing the issue during the Seven network’s coverage of the Caulfield Cup, McAveney described the vision as “horrifying”.

“As a small-time owner it made me feel ashamed,” he said.

“Not to have known is not good enough.”

“For the sake of the future, we need to shine a spotlight on whatever might be lurking in the shadows and take action right now.”
