It’s seventh vs eight to cap off a remarkably 2019 NSW Cup finals series when the Newtown Jets and Wentworthville Magpies go head to head in the 2019 NSW Cup grand final on Sunday Afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match at Bankwest Stadium, starting from 3:05pm (AEST).

What are the odds? In just a 12-team competition, the Newtown Jets and Wentworthville Magpies both finished technically in the bottom half of the ladder, but snuck into finals thanks to the NSW Cup’s top-eight finals system.

This despite both finishing with just 11 wins for the season – Wentworthville having an 11-11 record, while Newtown had ten losses and a draw.

The Jets have beaten the Mounties, Bears and most recently the minor premiers St George Illawarra in a preliminary final on their way to the decider.

The Magpies, meanwhile, have taken down three NRL reserves sides in a row to make it to the decider – the Penrith Panthers, Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The Jets are chasing their first premiership since winning in 2012, and hoping to redeem a devastating 12-18 loss to the Bulldogs in last year’s grand final.

They have plenty of NRL experience in their squad, coming in the form of Blayke Brailey, William Kennedy, Sione Katoa, Ronaldo Mulitalo, Scott Sorensen, Jayson Bukuya, Billy Magoulias and Greg Eastwood.

The same is true of the Magpies, who have at their disposals former Parramatta captain Tim Mannah, and also boast the likes of Matt McIlwrick, David Gower, Peni Terepo, Oregon Kaufusi, Josh Hoffman, Ethan Parry, George Jennings and Jaeman Salmon.
