The troops are back as the Brisbane Broncos desperately look to halt a four-game losing streak against the Cronulla Sharks at Suncorp Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at 7:35pm (AEST).

While we are only seven rounds into the 2019 season, the Broncos are already in dire straits. They put in an improved effort against Canberra last week, but it was still not enough as they fell 26-22.

For a brief moment, they looked capable of pulling off the upset. That was before they conceded two soft tries, falling back into the same old habits Michael Chee-Kam had exposed only a week earlier.

With a 1-5 record heading into Saturday’s game, Brisbane currently sit in 14th position on the ladder, a far cry from the top-four finish many predicted for Anthony Seibold’s men in 2019.

They are boosted by the returns of Tevita Pangai-Junior (suspension) and James Roberts (achilles) though.

Confidence of turning it around is low – from external critics, that is. Whether the Broncos believe it, however, is another story. One that will be revealed come full time on Saturday.

The Sharks weren’t much better, in the first half at least, when they collapsed to an early 14-0 deficit against the Panthers.

To their credit, they fought their way back into the contest, exploiting Penrith’s reshuffled left-edge to run away 24-20 winners.

Andrew Fifita and Briton Nikora led from the front and while the latter won’t be there this week, Cronulla are a well-drilled machine. Scott Sorensen should fill in seamlessly.

Each player knows their role. It’s something that can’t be said for their opposition at the moment.

On that – can anyone explain to me why the Broncos are $1.60 favourites for this one?

Prediction
The Broncos will find it tough against their next three opponents – Souths, Manly and Easts. So defeat on Saturday means they could potentially soon be staring at just one win from their opening 10 rounds of the 2019 season.

Stakes are high on Saturday and I get the sense they will turn it around eventually.

But the Sharks are the kings of the grind and they should get the job done.

Cronulla by 6.
