The Brisbane Broncos will look to get their NRLW campaign off to a fast start at home when they take on the St George Illawarra Dragons in the opening round. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 1:45pm (AEST).
The NRLW competition got underway yesterday with the New Zealand Warriors running out as surprise winners over the Sydney Roosters.
What the match showed was the value of a pre-season trial getting the team ready to go, which is something the Broncos have had the luxury of ahead of the competition, unlike their opponents.
Brisbane last week overcame the Papua New Guinea national team 40 points to 4 in what was an impressive performance.
With this destined to be their first and last home game for the tournament as well, they will be keen to put some points on the board and pick up a win, helping them be in the driver’s seat for a grand final spot.
The Broncos will be led throughout the game and season by Jillaroos playmaker Ali Brigginshaw, who had a superb run through the World Cup last year.
She is dangerous, and with a solid forward pack featuring Steph Hancock and hooker Brittany Breayley, they will be aiming to roll the Dragons up the middle.
While the Dragons haven’t had a game together yet, they aren’t going to go down without a fight on the road.
The Red V have been one of the big backers of women’s rugby league during the early years and have named a formidable squad, featuring captain Sam Bremmer at the back.
Bremmer is one of the best players in the game today and her combination with halves Keeley Davis and Raecene McGregor will be incredibly important to the way they end up.
Of course, it’s not just in the backs where the Dragons have talent. Kezie Apps and Talesha Quinn also appear in the side.
Prediction
The Broncos are at home, have the pre-season match under their belt and should win a close one here against the obvious talent stacked across the Dragons’ side.
Broncos by 6.
