Here come the Raiders. It was a danger signs for the Raiders after Round 8 having won just two games and losing to the Warriors in Golden Point. But an impressive three weeks and wins over the Bulldogs, Sharks and Rabbitohs has them sitting on the cusp of the top 8. Led by Josh Papalii in his 250th game, they completely outclassed the Rabbitohs in Dubbo last weekend and return home to face a hot and cold Eels side with top four aspirations.
The Eels got away with a last gasp win over the Sea Eagles in torrid conditions last week. It was a good bounce back from a magic round loss to the Roosters. The Eels are travelling OK in 6th spot, but given they have claimed the scalps of the Storm and Panthers away from home, this is a team with much loftier expectations of themselves in 2022.
Jarrod Croker is a massive out for the Raiders after suffering a dislocated shoulder at training.
Jamal Fogarty makes his first appearance for the Raiders at halfback and pushes Brad Schneider out of the side. Charnze Nicholl-Klokstad is out with a hamstring injury, with Xavier Savage taking his place from the bench. Harry Rushon makes way for Ryan Sutton on the bench. The Eels have just the one change, Waqa Blake taking the place of Hayze Perham on the wing.
The Raiders won the last game between these two 12-10, but the Eels have won 3 of the past 4 clashes. Go back a little further though, and the Raiders have won 6 of the past 9 games between the two. They Raiders enjoy a 60% record against the Eels, and a massive 76% win record at home from 17 games played. The Eels may have got a win in Canberra last year but it was the first time since 2006.
Prediction
This is a massive game for both clubs, with State of Origin about to begin for the year. The Raiders get a win and they may be sitting in the top 8, a prospect that a month ago looked no chance of happening. The Eels are a chance of being in the top 4 if they win. They are looking for some consistency too, they haven’t won back to back games since rounds 4 and 5.
The Eels have shown how good they can be, they have wins against the top 2 teams to prove it. But they were somewhat lucky at the death against the Sea Eagles last week and are still that level away from being a genuine premiership threat. They have time to get it right, but these are the games they need to win.
The pieces are starting to fall in to place for Canberra, they have key personnel coming back and are starting to play the brand of footy that we associate with the Raiders. They will be confident for this one, back at home and with a wet sail. It should be an absolute cracker. I’m backing the Eels big game players to get them home at the death,
