Round 11 of the NRL premiership continues this evening as the Canberra Raiders host the Parramatta Eels at GIO Stadium in Canberra. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:35pm (AEST).

The Raiders are one of the hardest teams in the league to get a read on. When they’re good, they’re very good, as victories over the Sharks and Broncos so far in 2023 indicate. When they’re bad, they can be truly diabolical, having shipped 50 against Penrith and slumped to limp defeats against the Dolphins and Knights.

Sometimes those two states coincide in the same game, having recently come perilously close to blowing big leads against both the Dolphins and Bulldogs.

Regardless, they’ve now won four on the trot and return home for the first time in almost a month to face a struggling Parramatta team. With Canberra’s winter chill setting in and temperatures likely to plummet into the low single digits, this is where and when the Raiders have traditionally been at their most formidable.

Parramatta are two games into an eight-game stretch that will likely define their season. One of those is a trip to Souths in round 12, but Parramatta would expect to win, and need to win, at least five or six of the other seven games. So far, they’ve managed a big win against a hapless Knights outfit, followed by a haphazard defeat to the Titans at ‘Magic Round’.

As a result, the Eels are now four points out of the top eight, and defeat to the Raiders – who sit ninth and are one of the teams four points ahead of the Eels – while far from terminal with more than half of the season still remaining, would be a significant blow and further lengthen their odds of playing finals.

On the personnel front, the Raiders came through Magic Round largely unscathed, though Albert Hopoate has been recalled on the wing in place of Xavier Savage. In another blow to the Eels, half Mitchell Moses has been ruled out due to concussion, with Jakob Arthur to start in his place.

Even allowing for the Raiders’ well-known propensity to, in rugby league parlance, ‘not show up’, they should still win this through a combination of home-field advantage, decent form and a weakened, mostly out of form opposition.

But true to form they’ll make it hard for themselves and keep the Eels interested throughout. Raiders by 4.
