The Canberra Raiders host the St George Illawarra Dragons with both teams looking to keep their finals hopes alive in round 22 of the NRL. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2pm AEST.

Depending on what happens between the Roosters and Cowboys on Saturday afternoon, the Raiders will either be attempting to stay in touch with the top eight or be looking at an opportunity to draw level on points with the eighth-placed Roosters.

Whatever the case, the Raiders can’t afford to drop any more points because they can’t rely on the Roosters reciprocating, even though the Raiders have an easier draw on paper in the next three weeks.

The Dragons chances of playing finals football can be described as, at best, ‘still mathematically possible’. We all know what that means, though: they’re not going to make it.

Win this afternoon and the Dragons will still have a chance if they can somehow completely reverse their insipid form and have other results go their way in the last three rounds. Lose and their chances go from a finite improbability to a virtual impossibility, as Douglas Adams might’ve said.

In team news, Canberra head coach Ricky Stuart will be watching from his sofa after some bizarre comments in last week’s press conference. Of greater concern are the absences of in-form winger Nick Cotric and gun prop Joseph Tapine. Xavier Savage has been named to return at fullback, while Corey Horsburgh replaces Tapine.

For the Dragons, Tariq Sims is now almost certainly an ex-Dragon after picking up a four-week suspension. Tyrell Fuimaono has been named to replace Sims in the Dragons’ 17. Cody Ramsey is a chance of returning from injury after being named in the reserves.

Six weeks ago, these two teams played a virtual stalemate amid a tempest at Wollongong, with the Dragons hanging on by the skin of their teeth (and a controversial refereeing non-decision) to claim a two-point win.

But since Illawarra and St George merged in 1999, the Dragons have won just four of 17 matches in Canberra, and once went 14-years between victories there.

It should be close, but Canberra’s a slightly better team and the Dragons are allergic to the nation’s capital.

Canberra by 8.
