Having rocketed back into the top eight, the Newcastle Knights face a potential banana-skin game against the last-placed Canterbury Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. Tune in to the action in this second match of the day from Redcliffe with live scores on The Roar from 5:30pm (AEST).

Seventh spot is now the Knights’ to lose heading into the final three weeks of the home-and-away season. They’re now seventh courtesy of their tense 2-point win over the Sharks last week – a game clear of the eighth-placed Titans – with a very soft draw to come.

The sixth-placed Eels are all but certainly now out of reach, but fixing their ugly points differential, currently at -137, will be a priority for Adam O’Brien before a potential cutthroat elimination final. With games against the Bulldogs and the Broncos in their final three, there’s an opportunity to build some strong form leading in.

They’ll be without Tyson Frizell for this one, who has copped a one-match ban for a high shot on Will Kennedy, opening the door for Brodie Jones to start in the number 11. David Klemmer replaces Daniel Saifiti (knee), while Connor Watson is still the first-choice number 13 despite his impending move to the Roosters.

The wooden spoon is all but the Bulldogs’ now, and while it’s been a dire season for new coach Trent Barrett, there have been occasional bright spots. They were gutsy in defeat to the Warriors last week, and with an influx of talent set to arrive at Canterbury next year, there’s cause for optimism.

Fullback Nick Meaney is under a cloud due to concussion, as is Jake Averillo for foot and calf issues. Lachlan Lewis is on standby to replace the latter, but Meaney may prove more troublesome to replace.
