Match result:

They had to defend, defend and do more defending, but the Canterbury Bulldogs have held on against a fairly sloppy Penrith Panthers outfit, who now have a stressful situation again to get into the eight.

Final score
Canterbury Bulldogs 16
Penrith Panthers 8

Match preview:

The Canterbury Bulldogs will keep trying to move away from the bottom of the NRL table on Saturday afternoon as they play a Penrith Panthers side looking to get back on the winners’ list in Parramatta. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5:30pm (AEST).

The Bulldogs have had a rough season, and last week just about summed up why they are in the bottom two, but clear of the wooden spoon thanks to the incompetence of the Gold Coast Titans.

Canterbury had ordinary defence during the first half and were lucky to go into the halftime break only 14-0 down against the Roosters, but then had ample opportunity to come back and even win the game, only for their attack to look like it had no direction and frankly, no idea.

Scoring points has been the biggest problem all year for the men from Belmore, despite the fact they have often made few errors and had a lot of both possession and territory.

The simple fact is that opposition teams find them quite easy to defend, and with an inexperienced spine featuring Lachlan Lewis and Jack Cogger it’s hardly a surprise.

For the Bulldogs to hang onto the Panthers today, they will need to be at their best and more, because Penrith have been the form side of the competition in recent times.

The Panthers might have lost to the Raiders at home in a fall to Earth last week, but they had won seven on the trot before that and are now a side who have gone from the bottom of the pile to an almost certain finals team.

They aren’t quite there yet and will need to finish the season strongly, but they are now on 20 competition points in eighth spot and have a pretty easy finish to the year, draw-wise.

The form of their forwards, as well as the spark provided by a number of youngsters brought in mid-season has really pushed the Panthers back to their best, and the kicking game of James Maloney and Nathan Cleary has also improved out of sight.

As long as they can hold their defence solidly today and hold off the Bulldogs stunted attack, then they shouldn’t have too many problems in getting the ball out wide and scoring points, although they need to make sure they execute chances and don’t let any potential hangover set in from last week’s loss.

Prediction
In a battle of the west, I hardly expect the Panthers to go galloping away with this, but they should win.
