The Canterbury Bulldogs and St George Illawarra Dragons do battle in the now traditional Queens Birthday match at ANZ Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4pm (AEST).

The hotbed of rumour and innuendo that surrounds the Bulldogs at the present time can’t be helping anyone. Dean Pay is under pressure, about to be sacked according to some. It’s hard to know what to believe and which parts of the narrative are merely fiction.

On the field should be the club’s focus, with recent results proving less than inspiring and four losses from their last five matches sees the blue and white anchored to the bottom of the ladder.

In essence, the Bulldogs have an impotent attack and could well have beaten the Raiders in Round 12 had they been able to show some more flair and creativity with the ball.

Rather interestingly, they face the Dragons today, another team on the slide and heading further south on the ladder the longer the season goes.

The last time the Dragons tasted success was on the 20th of April as they held on for a tightly fought win against the Manly Sea Eagles.

Since then, four straight losses led into the bye and a win has now become urgent. A loss to the Bulldogs today and the Red V faithful might just about revolt after what looked a promising start to the season.

In team news, the Dragons have confirmed that their three State of Origin representatives will indeed back up this afternoon and it appears likely that Josh Jackson and Dylan Napa will do the same for the Bulldogs.

Logic suggests both teams will struggle to score once again and we could be set for something of a grinding affair to celebrate the monarch’s day.

It would be somewhat curious should the game open up and the teams score some tries. Neither has looked impressive in attack all season and the coaches will have to decide whether today is the day to throw off the shackles.

Prediction
Throw a dart at the wall folks; that is your best chance of predicting this match. Early in the season, the Dragons belted the Dogs 40-4 and they were looking good at that stage. Canterbury were horrible and the teams have both been so up and down in 2019 that it is hard to take much from their performances on that day.

I’m going with dumb luck on this one. The Bulldogs will have one of their rare days, exceed 20 points and the Dragons will struggle to match their intensity in the centre of the field. If you are not happy with that, just flip the team names in the sentence and the alternative result could be just as likely.

Bulldogs 24 Dragons 14.
