It’s sudden death footy as the Cronulla Sharks take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the second semi final of the 2022 NRL finals. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8pm AEST.
It shouldn’t be that hard for teams to get pumped for finals. However, there is a question mark over these teams, who were both involved in extraordinary matches last weekend.
Ninety-three minutes – that’s how long the Cowboys took to finally take the win against the Sharks. Ten minutes of extra time couldn’t separate the teams, and then came golden point. Sharks fans knew how good Val Holmes was at field goals, and he nailed his attempt from over 40 metres out.
It probably shouldn’t have got to that point though, with one of the best defensive lines all season missing a whopping 54 tackles. If they defended better, they win. Craig Fitzgibbon will be seeking a much improved effort this weekend.
Fitzgibbon has been able to name an unchanged team, with Dale Finucane, Toby Rudolf and Will Kennedy all better for the run last week. Nicho Hynes has been spotted in a “no contact” training shirt but we would expect him to play.
Last Sunday afternoon, we travelled back 30, maybe even 40 years in time. That was simply brutal. The Roosters looked on top early but, after cheap shots from both teams, the Tricolours went looking for square-ups whilst the Rabbits started to play some footy.
Maybe it was the loss of James Tedesco, but the Roosters couldn’t regain their composure.
So much of the Rabbitohs’ attack is generated through Damien Cook and Cameron Murray and their fast play the balls. If Souths pack gets on top and Cronulla are back-pedalling, that’s when Cody Walker, Latrell Mitchell and Alex Johnston come into play.
Thomas Burgess has been rubbed out for a fortnight after a series of high shots. His place is taken by Michael Chee Kam, in the only change to the South Sydney team.
Prediction
In their only game this year, the Sharks got home in a golden point thriller after Mitchell missed three field goal attempts. So, we don’t get much of a lead here.
With Burgess out, the Rabbitohs are missing a bit of grunt up front, whilst the Sharks are fielding close to their strongest pack. That may prove the difference.
It will be tight, but the Sharks should squeak home in a close one.
