The Cronulla Sharks hosts South Sydney Rabbitohs in a clash of top four aspirants as round 20 of the NRL continues. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm AEST.

Both sides enter this game in good form. Cronulla have won five of their last six and while they were narrowly beaten away to Penrith last weekend, lost few admirers as they mounted a strong challenge to the defending premiers and runaway league leaders.

Souths rose to sixth place after their fourth straight victory, a 24-12 triumph over an out-of-sorts Melbourne, and now sit just two points behind third-placed Cronulla and fourth-placed Brisbane.

While Souths’ top four ambitions are not misplaced, their road to the finals is perilous. In addition to Cronulla tonight and the Warriors next week, they face Parramatta, Penrith, North Queensland and Easts in a brutal final month. Every two points gained from here on will enhance Souths’ finals prospects and hurt those of near rivals.

Based on their recent performances, the Sharks will surely start as favourites. But should they?

Prediction

Cronulla’s one of the best teams in the NRL at playing in and through opposition defensive lines, ranking at or near the top when it comes to line engagements, tackle breaks, decoy runs and offloads.

Souths have a bit of an issue when it comes to containing ball runners and limiting second phase play. Their likely path to victory is through winning the physical confrontation in the middle and, subsequently, field position, thereby limiting Cronulla’s ability to shift quickly and offload.

And this is a big part of what Souths have been doing recently, setting a platform for the fit again Latrell Mitchell to renew links with Cody Walker and the outside backs and reinvigorate the Rabbitohs’ attack.

I’m tipping Souths to win the middle tonight, especially in the absence of the suspended Dale Finucane, limit opportunities for Cronulla to shift laterally from good field position and ride the form of Mitchell and Walker to victory.

Souths by 6.
