Round 19 of the NRL will see the cellar-dwelling Gold Coast Titans host the tenth-placed Brisbane Broncos! Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5:30pm (AEST).

The Broncos have plenty to play for in this game. A win here could see them leapfrog the Warriors and the Knights to finish the round in 8th place, depending on other results of course. A loss could see them drop as low as 12th.

The Titans – chasing their first win since round 13 when they defeated the Broncos 26-18 – will be looking to play the role of party-spoilers, making the Broncos’ run to the finals more difficult than it has to be.

They are also in a three-way tussle with the Bulldogs and the Dragons and will be looking to heap the pressure upon those two sides with a win over Brisbane.

Michael Gordon will return to the fullback position after coming off the bench last week against the Storm. This pushes AJ Brimson to halfback, and Ryley Jacks to the reserves.

Tyrone Peachey also returns from a pectoral injury this week, playing off the bench in the 14 jersey. His inclusion in the side will push back-up hooker Mitch Rein out of the 17.

Finally, England star and former Leeds Rhino Kallum Watkins will make his long-awaited debut for the Titans after signing with the club in June.

He will take his place in the centres alongside Brian Kelly. A six-time premiership-winner with Leeds, his experience will add plenty to a struggling Titans side. It’ll be very exciting to see how his NRL career progresses.

For the Broncos, Matt Gillett returns from a groin injury sees him take his place on the edge, pushing Tevita Pangai Jr to lock to replace Thomas Flegler who’s out through suspension. David Fifita also returns to the back row in a straight swap with Alex Glenn who moves to centre.

Prediction
It’d take some serious bravery to back the Titans in any contest at the moment. They showed some fight against the Storm and led early, but they are severely lacking in class and experience at the moment.

Club debutant Kallum Watkins brings plenty of both to the table, although the extent to which he can influence the entire team from right centre is questionable.

That said, the Broncos are no certainties. Their last three weeks have been their best three weeks of 2019. In that time, they defeated the Sharks despite scoring less tries, they drew with the Warriors and they put the lowly Bulldogs to the sword.

They won’t be complaining about the five competition points they’ve acquired, although this run has hardly been impressive.

I’m very interested to see how Brimson goes at halfback. I suspect Tyrone Roberts will take over most of the organising of the side, playing more like a 7 despite having the 6 on his back, while Brimson will likely play the running role to which he is far better suited.

The Titans will also be glad to have Mick Gordon back, although they will miss the danger that Brimson brings from kick returns.

I kind of like the Titans. This is exactly the sort of game that the Broncos will be expected to win (they go in as $1.41 favourites), which in my mind makes it exactly the sort of game they will lose. Plus they do say form and positions on the ladder go out the window in local derbies.
