The Gold Coast Titans and Canberra Raiders get a chance to cement their spot in the top eight tonight at Kogarah. Due to COVID restrictions earlier in the week in Brisbane, the NRL moved the Titans’ home game to Sydney. They may not have the home ground support, but this promises to be an exciting clash.
After a first-up loss against the Warriors, the Titans get a chance to make it three in a row tonight, following wins against the other Queensland teams. They get a sterner test here.
The move of Tino Fa’asuamaleaui to prop worked well against the Cowboys, with Tyrone Peachey given a free rein at lock. David Fifita worked well on the left edge, often just too good for the North Queensland defence.
Brian Kelly has been included on the reserves bench after returning from a hand injury. He could be a late addition to the line-up but, as it stands, the Titans are unchanged.
The Raiders suffered their first loss in 2021 last weekend against the Warriors. However, they spent most of the match with only one player on the bench and Curtis Scott nursing an injury. A contentious try awarded to the Warriors in the second half may have been the difference between a win and a loss.
Jack Wighton returned to his best form last weekend and Josh Hodgson also caused plenty of problems around the ruck. We will see how the Canberra pack back up after such a hard workout against the Warriors.
Dunamis Lui and Hudson Young return for Canberra, with Ryan Sutton moving back to lock as the replacement for the injured Joseph Tapine. Sebastian Kris and Ryan James need to pass concussion protocols to play. If fit, Kris will come in for Curtis Scott.
Prediction
The Titans were widely tipped as top-eight contenders at the start of the season and they are starting to live up to that tag.
However, Ricky Stuart would have adopted a siege mentality for his Raiders team this week and they will come out primed.
It will be close but I think Canberra will come away with a tight win.
