The Titans are in desperate need of a win, if for no other reason than to boost morale after slipping to second last on the ladder. However the Rabbitohs will be very eager to ensure that doesn’t happen, hanging on to the top 8 by just one rung and with the Raiders hot on their heels. Even with the Cowboys missing some of their best last week, it didn’t stop the Titans getting touched up at home. The Rabbitohs enjoyed a week off after the Tigers played them into some form a fortnight ago, a match they won 44-18.
It will very much be the story of the round – teams unlikely to be finalised until closer to kick-off pending a bruising Origin opener on Wednesday night. The Titans lose enigmatic fullback Jayden Campbell to a hamstring injury with AJ Brimson pushed to the back and Paul Turner into the halves. Corey Thompson is also out through injury, with Greg Marzhew the man to replace him. Patrick Herbert replaces Esan Masters. At time of writing, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui is named to back up after Origin 1.
Likewise for the Rabbitohs – their Origin trio of Cameron Murray, Jai Arrow and Damien Cook have been named to play but will have to get through Origin unscathed. Tevita Tatola returns to the side and bumps Mark Nicholls to the bench. Blake Taafe is out of the side altogether with Kodi Nikorima impressing at the back a couple of weeks ago. Latrell Mitchell is still at least another week or two away after testing positive for Covid.
The head to head form between these two makes for pretty grim reading for the Titans. They lost their last meeting 36-6 late last year, their sixth straight loss to the Rabbitohs. They have won just 6 from 20 matches between the two, their last win coming in 2016. Their biggest winning margin against the Rabbitohs is 7 points. They also haven’t beaten them at home since way back in 2009.
Prediction
The Titans aren’t a team that should be running second last. They play some scintillating football, but it is only ever in patches. They have led a number of games this year, but haven’t been able to ice them. They have led by 20 on two occasions and been run down, a stat which just about sums up their season. Add to that their woeful statistics against the Rabbitohs.
South Sydney have had a break off the back of a commanding win over the Tigers. They should be fresh and focused for this one, knowing that they do just cling onto a spot in the 8 by a thread at the moment. Cameron Murray and Damien Cook could be big inclusions for them if they do back up for Origin.
If the Rabbitohs do have their Origin players on deck, it could be a long afternoon for the Titans. They’ve lost one of their best in enigmatic fullback Jayden Campbell and desperately need a bye of their own to regroup.
