Australia start their finals push for the Rugby League World Cup this morning when they take on Lebanon at John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6:30am (AEDT).
Well, the knockout stages are finally here. In reality, this gives a chance for Australia to test their best 17 before a likely semi-final clash with New Zealand in a week’s time.
In their last pool match, Australia dismantled Italy by 66-6; however their display was far from flawless. There was far too much dropped ball, and the attack was a little clunky. They will be expecting far better against Lebanon.
Australia do have attacking points all over the park. Nathan Cleary and Cameron Munster are arguably the best halves in the game, whilst James Tedesco, Latrell Mitchell and Josh Addo-Carr are all able to create moments of brilliance.
We can also look forward to watching Isaah Yeo, Angus Crichton and Cameron Murray in action, with that backrow combination likely to cause problems for any defensive line.
In contrast to Australia’s opponents in the last two pool games, Lebanon do have a smattering of NRL talent. Mitchell Moses and Adam Doueihi form a classy halves pairing, while Jacob Kiraz and Josh Mansour are both regular first-graders.
It is probably up front where Lebanon are short on experience, and Australia will look to create dominance in the ruck. If they can do that, the Kangaroos can put a score on.
Last up, Lebanon thumped Jamaica 74-12. However, we get a better gauge on form via their first game against New Zealand, with the Kiwis running out 34-12 winners. New Zealand had to work hard for their victory, and the Lebanese deserve their spot in the quarter-finals.
Prediction
The Kangaroos will have their hardest challenge this morning since the win against Fiji.
Nevertheless, this is a very good Australian team that will be keen to impress Mal Meninga with World Cup success in sight.
They should be too good for a plucky Lebanese outfit.
