Show Preview

Magic Round continues tonight when the Manly Sea Eagles are the home team against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8:05pm.

It was seemingly only a few weeks ago when both these sides seemed destined for another poor year. The Broncos have shown some steel in recent weeks, beating the Titans and losing to the Cowboys by a field goal.

However, it’s the Sea Eagles that have been the big improvers, winning four of their last five games.

A large part of that recovery is due to the return of Tom Trbojevic. He was the difference against the Warriors last weekend, where he set up or scored six of Manly’s seven tries.

Prior to that, even his presence on the field was making a difference. Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran appear more assured in the halves and the Manly backs take on a much more settled look.

Martin Taupau returns after a week out with a head knock, pushing Sean Keppie to the interchange and Zac Saddler out of the 17. Taniela Paseka has been named but needs to pass some HIA protocols to play.

The Broncos looked all but home last weekend but a late Jason Taumalolo try and Valentine Holmes field goal stole what would have been an impressive win away in Townsville.

Payne Haas is in great form at the moment while the pick of Tyson Gamble at halfback seems to be paying dividends for Kevin Walters. After last week’s defeat, the Broncos will be itching to get back on the field tonight.

With Patrick Carrigan’s season cut short due to an ACL injury, Thomas Flegler will start at lock with John Asiata getting a spot on the interchange. Jake Turpin is the new captain.

Prediction
There is little doubt that the Brisbane Broncos have improved this season.

However, I don’t see them getting the win tonight. If the Manly forwards get their fair share of territory, the Manly halves and Tom Trbojevic will create enough chances to win.

Sea Eagles by 8.
