Match preview:

The Manly Sea Eagles come into the finals as a severely understrength unit, but one which has home ground advantage and the gritty toughness they have played with all year. They’ll need it in spades when they play the Cronulla Sharks in an elimination match. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).

The Sea Eagles have lost Tom Trbojevic to injury for the rest of the season, while Martin Taupau joins him on the sideline this week after copping a suspension for a swinging arm on Ray Stone in last week’s loss to the Eels.

While they headline the players missing for Manly, there are plenty of others, including Taniela Paseka, Joel Thompson and Curtis Sironen, which takes a massive chunk out of their forward pack.

It was the battle up front that they lost against the Parramatta Eels in their regular season game of the year, and the battle they lost which cost them fifth spot on the table.

While the Sea Eagles come into the finals down on form, confidence and talent, that mojo up front is one they will have to rediscover if they want to have a chance here.

The Cronulla Sharks are one of those teams who are simply happy to grind away in the middle third all day, and did just that last week to break down the Wests Tigers.

In what was a virtual finals game come early, the Sharks snatched the final spot in the eight with a win over the Tigers where they were patient, then went for the kill with some very efficient attack the moment the opportunity arrives.

The Sharks strike as the only team from the bottom four who could make a real run through the finals, and given their form, winning five of their last seven to qualify, it’s not a stretch to imagine that it’d be possible.

The Sea Eagles will also need to find a way to keep Shaun Johnson quiet, with the role of Daly Cherry-Evans a critical one in this contest.

The Sea Eagles do, however, have an incredibly one-sided record against the Sharks, winning 65 of 91 matches between the two clubs, including seven of nine in finals and 34 of 40 at home.

Prediction
The Sea Eagles will fight hard, but the loss of Taupau is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Cronulla to win.

Sharks by 8.
