Match result:

The Roosters held on to beat Manly 26-18 at Lottoland after a first-half masterclass from Luke Keary.

With Cooper Cronk out, Keary took the reins and set up several impressive tries.

The Roosters ran out to a 22-0 lead in the first half with a completely dominant display.

Brett Morris scored after just four minutes when Brad Parker misjudged Keary’s kick.

The halfback then set up Daniel Tupou five minutes later as the Chooks went 10-0 up.

As the rain poured down Manly made error after error and then Boyd Cordner crossed after Keary’s tidy offload.

The Roosters were cruising, even though they lost Morris to injury and Lindsay Collins for a head test.

Right before half-time Tupou got his second try of the night after Keary’s perfect chip to the wing.

Lachlan Lam came on in the second half to make his NRL debut and set up Cordner for a double with a smart grubber kick.

At 26-0 the game looked completely over, but when Keary went off for a head test after a knock the Sea Eagles started to claw their way back in.

In the 58th minute Manase Fainu gave the home side some hop when he barged over to get the Sea Eagles on the scoreboard.

Straight away they were in again, Moses Suili putting Reuben Garrick into space and the winger found Jake Trbojevic for a try.

Daly Cherry-Evans’ conversion made it 26-12. Momentum had shifted to Manly and the Roosters kept handing them possession.

With four minutes left Suili scored, after a fortunate deflected Cherry-Evans kick put him away into space in the right corner.

But there was not enough time for the Sea Eagles to strike again, and the Roosters earned their first win of 2019.

Both teams went down disappointingly in Round 1. The Sea Eagles were beaten by the Wests Tigers, while the Roosters were defeated by their arch-rivals South Sydney at the SCG.

Both sides will be desperate to get back to winning ways. As the defending champions, the Roosters might be away from home but will still be favourites.

But they will have to make do without influential halfback Cooper Cronk, who is unavailable with a hamstring strain. Youngster Lachlan Lam will make his NRL debut in his absence.

The Chooks will also be without hooker Jake Friend, with Victor Radley moving from lock to the number 9 spot, and Isaac Lui off the bench and into the run-on side.

Manly have injury and suspension issues of their own and will again without vital outside backs Tom Trbojevic and Dylan Walker. Brendan Elliot will deputise at fullback once more.

Former Panthers forward Corey Waddell will make his NRL debut off the bench for the northern beaches outfit, while Joel Thompson will reach his 200th appearance in first-grade.

The Sea Eagles’ attack was poor at Leichhardt Oval last week, so the onus will be on Kane Elgey and Daly Cherry-Evans to ignite the maroon and white offence.

Manly have a great record at home against the Roosters historically, but the pressure will be on the Tricolors to get their premiership defence going.

Prediction
Manly are outclassed and the Roosters should have too many weapons in their arsenal. The Roosters to win by 8 points.
