Despite almost no geographical reason to be rivals, the Storm and Sea Eagles have developed into one of the unmissable games for fans over the years, and this promises to be the best of the lot.

The Sea Eagles have stunned everyone in 2019, with a roster tipped to be in the bottom four currently pushing for top four honours under the returned Des Hasler.

It’s been one of the more stunning seasons when factored against pre-season expectations in recent history, however, they come up against a red-hot Melbourne side who have been in fine form and already have the minor premiership all but wrapped up and delivered.

The sides are yet to play each other in 2019, but for Manly, this will be a good test to see where they really measure up against the competition yardstick.

As they fight for a top four berth, every competition point is becoming critical as well, but to compete with the Storm, they need to be at their absolute best.

And that’ll start in the forwards. Martin Taupau and Addin Fonua-Blake have been among the best forwards in the competition this year, and while they can match it with Jesse Bromwich and Nelson Asofa-Solomona, it’s the bench where this game could turn.

The Storm’s bench, featuring Brandon Smith and Christian Welch, is one of the strongest in the competition, and they are a step ahead of Hasler’s side in that department.

For that reason, the Sea Eagles, who come into this game on the back of a thumping win over Parramatta last week, must get off to a good start and allow Daly Cherry-Evans to control the game with his laser-accurate kicking.

If they can do that and keep the Storm at the wrong end of the park, then it allows Tom Trbojevic to get involved and weave his magic.

However, that formula is easier said than done. There are plenty of reasons the Storm are at the top of the pack, but Cameron Smith and the way he leads his side into the grind each week is a key part of it.

They have a mountain of strike power as well, so any length of time on the front foot usually sees them score. They are the most potent side in the competition inside the opposition’s 20, scoring once every 11 tackles on average, and with Cameron Munster and Felise Kaufusi coming back after a week off, they will be fresh and ready to get things going in the same direction.

Prediction
Melbourne are at home, and just too good here. It’d be something of a surprise to see them lose although it’s crucial for Manly to keep it close and prove they can compete against the big guns.

Storm by 8.
