Match preview

An out of sorts New Zealand Warriors will be playing for nothing but pride as they return home against a red-hot Manly Sea Eagles outfit on Friday evening. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 6pm (AEST).

There is simply no getting around the fact of just how poor the Warriors were last weekend, as they got steamrolled by the Raiders.

Playing at home against a side on a five-day turnaround, they had a chance to prove the right to feel ripped off by the refereeing controversy of the week prior was valid.

Instead, they put in one of their worst performances of the season, falling 46 points to 12.

With an exceptionally difficult run home, Stephen Kearney’s men had to win last week at home, as they do this week, but their finals hopes are all but extinguished, and a Warriors side playing for nothing but pride can often end with disastrous results.

Defensively, they were horrid last week, and while we know what their attack can turn on at its best, the chance of them being able to do that on the back of dropped balls and missed tackles is slim to nil.

If there is a team who would like to take advantage of that, it’s Manly.

They are pushing hard for the top four and a double chance in the finals, so every game from here to the end of the season as they chase the Roosters, Raiders and Rabbitohs (all two points ahead) is pivotal, given their for and against is just short.

Manly could well look to run up a similar score to the one Canberra did last week, and with a forward pack led by the in-form Addin Fonua-Blake, Martin Taupau and Jake Trbojevic creating opportunities for Tom Trbojevic and Daly Cherry-Evans, they could do that.

More importantly though, Manly have had a way of crushing opposition through their rushing, aggressive goal line defence in 2019.

It’s been on display through each of their last three victories, and if they come out and start strongly on that front, the Warriors could simply wither in the face of pressure, as they have done multiple times this year.

Also pushing into the favour of the Warriors for this contest is their incredible record over the Warriors. They have won 24 off the 33 matches played between the clubs, including 11 of 14 in Auckland.

Prediction
The travel won’t be easy for the Sea Eagles, but we said that about the Raiders last week, and the Warriors were dismal. With little left to play for, it’s hard to see that general script changing into the new round, where it’ll be the same story for the men from Auckland as Hasler’s men continue their march to September.

Sea Eagles by 14.
