The Newcastle Knights are at home to the Brisbane Broncos in Thursday night NRL. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm AEST.

The Broncos might be the real deal. Most didn’t think they’d take care of South Sydney in Sydney, but they did, and most didn’t think they’d crush Manly at Magic Round, but they did.

The defence is undeniably a lot, lot better than it was however there has been late drama with Adam Reynolds a late out for tonight’s game through injury (groin) with Ezra Mam named to make his NRL debut at halfback.

He’ll have his work cut out to fill Reynolds’ shoes.

Brisbane have scored far fewer tries than everyone else above them, and the same as Manly, not much more than the Titans or Warriors.

But in a topsy turvy year for scoring, defence is what is winning games and they can keep doing that tonight.

Te Maire Martin injured his hip in last week’s win over Manly but has been named at fullback for the in-form Brisbane side.

Veteran forward Tyson Frizell is back for the Knights from an illness while Anthony Milford will play five-eighth in what will be his first game at NRL level since the end of last season at Brisbane. Tex Hoy drops back to 18th man duties and Dane Gagai (cheekbone) and Jake Clifford are in the reserves and could be late additions to the game-day squad.

The struggle for the Knights has been that when they lose, they often lose badly, conceding points in bunches. They’ll be hopeful of a strong performance in front of their loyal fans.
