Round 1 of the NRL season continues this Saturday afternoon as the Newcastle Knights take on the New Zealand Warriors at McDonald Jones Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 3:00pm (AEDT).

New coach, new attitude. We have been hearing that a bit over summer with Adam O’Brien taking the reins at Newcastle. Certainly last year for the Knights will go down as one that promised so much midway through the season but delivered so little in the end.

Newcastle have been busy on the recruitment front with a new centre pairing in Enari Tuala and Gehamat Shibasaki making their debut for the Knights. Jayden Brailey, at hooker, will tighten up the defence around the ruck as well as helping provide structure to the attack.

Kurt Mann will start at five-eightth allowing Kalyn Ponga to have a roving role at fullback. Along with Mitchell Pearce, Ponga holds the keys to Newcastle’s success this season.

Early season injuries have hurt the Warriors with Agnatius Paasi and Bunty Afoa, amongst others, sitting on the sidelines.

Talented half Chanel Harris-Tavita gets to partner Blake Green in the halves, with Kodi Nikorima starting from the bench.

Much of the attack will centre around Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who has overcome a foot injury and will start at the back for the Warriors.

Prediction
To me, this game has the smell of an upset around it, with the Warriors featuring towards the bottom of most tipsters’ competition ladders this year. They will be keen to prove a few people wrong.

Having said that, I am still going with the Knights in a close one. I think David Klemmer and the Saifiti twins will win the yardage battle and create enough opportunities for the likes of Ponga to shine.
