The North Queensland Cowboys host the Canberra Raiders in Townsville in Round 4 NRL action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm (AEDT).
Canberra kickstarted their season with a tough 17-10 victory over the Knights last weekend and when added to their win over the Titans in Round 1, provided positive signs for the men from the nation’s capital.
The Cowboys have started poorly and the thrashing at the hands of the Sharks in Round 3 will be something they need to forget immediately and address in this match tonight.
The talk around the strength of the North Queensland pack has proven to be well off the mark and both the Sharks and the Broncos have beaten them up in the middle of this field so far in 2019.
The Raiders have looked structurally solid, with a loss to the Storm their only defeat to this point and Ricky Stuart looks to have a balanced and talented squad with which to make a run at finals football.
Sam Williams played an important role for the Raiders last weekend and if able to continue his form, he may provide an answer to the Raiders’ issues in the halves.
Jack Wighton is still learning the pivot role and a sharing of the load with Williams looks the best way for the green machine to succeed this season.
The Cowboys need more from their engine room in order to provide Michael Morgan and Jake Clifford with quality opportunities to weave their magic and lay on tries. With a pack that has been unable to roll through the middle in the opening three rounds, the Cowboys look less threatening than many expected early in the season.
Prediction
I’ll back the Raiders’ structure and improved patience in this one. After another season of losses in close matches, Canberra showed against the Knights that they might just be ready to begin winning the close ones.
The Cowboys look a work in progress and coming up against one of the biggest and most powerful packs in the competition will make a home victory tough to achieve tonight.
