Round 3 winds up tonight when the North Queensland Cowboys host the Gold Coast Titans at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6:15pm (AEDT).
It’s a big call to call a team’s season over after just two rounds but, for the North Queensland Cowboys, it’s a close-run thing. Losing to the 2020 minor premiers was expected. Bumbling and fumbling their way to a loss against the Dragons last weekend was another thing altogether.
From the outside, it looks as if the Cowboys spine is misfiring. Michael Morgan needs to get his hands on the ball far more than what he is doing. Valentine Holmes is showing glimpses of what he can do and perhaps needs to be closer to the action.
Todd Payten has resisted the urge to make changes. Murray Taulagi comes in for the suspended Kyle Feldt. Otherwise, they are unchanged, with Jason Taumalolo remaining on the sidelines.
The Gold Coast Titans were tipped as one of the big improvers in 2021. They didn’t show it in Round 1 but there were definitely glimpses in Round 2.
After an even start, the Titans comfortably accounted for the Broncos 28-16.
Perhaps their new-look roster needed a little bit of time to gel, but David Fifita’s two-try performance against the Broncos suggests that he had found his role at the Titans.
AJ Brimson is a star in the making whilst Jamal Fogarty provides the stability that the Titans need.
Justin Holbrook has brought Tanah Boyd in for the injured Ash Taylor, who will be missing for a few weeks. Last start winners, there was no reason for other changes.
Prediction
The loss of Ash Taylor hurts the Titans but they do have an exciting replacement in Tanah Boyd.
The Cowboys seem to be a team playing without confidence and Todd Payten has a massive challenge on his hands.
The Titans will win.
