The Parramatta Eels desperately need to turn their horror current form around against the equally struggling North Queensland Cowboys when they lock horns on Saturday night. Tune into events from the Gold Coast with live scores on The Roar from 7:35pm (AEST).

It’s unlike the Eels to stage a late-season fadeout after giving their fans great hope (sarcasm), and even by their standards, the fall in 2021 has been stark.

Within touching distance of the Storm and Panthers in the top two mere weeks ago, they’ve lost four in a row, and five of their last six. Fellow top sides have beaten up on Brad Arthur’s men time and time again, meaning they’re now in sixth with three weeks before finals.

With matches against the Storm and Panthers themselves to come, this match might be their last hope of avoiding heading into an elimination final on the back of seven consecutive defeats. Centre Tom Opacic is unavailable after hurting his ribs in the 56-10 loss to Manly last week, while this week’s edition of winger lotto sees Haze Dunster start in the number five over Michael Oldfield.

The Cowboys’ season has also fallen apart in recent weeks, but theirs has come from a much lower base. Nine straight defeats have turned Todd Payten’s team from finals hopeful to also-rans, with their only aim for the rest of the season to avoid a lower-placed finish than bitter rivals the Broncos.

Captain Jason Taumalolo and young gun Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow’s inclusions in the extended squad say plenty about Payten’s desperation to turn things around, but the fact that both have been named among the reserves sums up their chances of actually playing. There is more optimism around Reuben Cotter’s return from a foot injury, while Kyle Feldt and Coen Hess are both expected to recover from jaw and concussion issues respectively to line up on Saturday night.
