Round 1 continues tonight when the Penrith Panthers host the North Queensland Cowboys at Panthers Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:35pm (AEDT).

After going so close in 2020, the reigning minor premiers begin their quest tonight to go one better. Whilst a similar winning streak seems a long way away, there’s no doubt the Panthers will again be a major force in this competition.

The Panthers have lost some experienced personnel, with James Tamou and Josh Mansour among those leaving the club. Moses Leota will likely be called upon to try and replace James Tamou’s consistency in the front row.

With Brent Naden not being considered for selection for the first four rounds, Paul Momirovski gets his chance to cement a first-grade spot ahead of Naden and Tyrone May.

Injuries ravaged the Cowboys last year, with Michael Morgan, Jason Taumalolo and Valentine Holmes all missing for extended periods.

But that wasn’t the sole reason for the Cowboys’ bottom eight finish. Despite having a good attacking side on paper, they struggled to turn that into points.

New coach Todd Payten has given the playmakers free rein to play what is in front of them rather than reverting to structure.

Josh McGuire is likely to play after returning to team training after a hamstring injury.

Prediction
I’m predicting the Cowboys will have a much better 2021. A top-eight spot is well within reach.

However, they need to travel to the foot of the mountains on a Saturday night in front of a large crowd. The Panthers should get the two points.

Penrith Panthers by 10.
