Show Preview
The NRL finals get underway tonight as the Penrith Panthers host the Sydney Roosters at Panthers Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from from 7:50pm (AEST).
While we are running a little late in 2020, finals time is always a great time of the year. For these two teams, a chance to advance to a home preliminary final and be one game away from a big one awaits the winner. For the loser though, it’s a likely match up against the Raiders next weekend.
The Panthers barely got out of first gear last weekend as they romped to their 15th straight win. The 42-0 win was little more than a training run and Ivan Cleary will be happy with their preparation.
Their spine of Dylan Edwards, Api Koroisau, Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai is arguably the best in the competition. If the Roosters are slightly off their game, this quartet will dominate. We can’t forget their forward pack though, with James Fisher-Harris having a great season.
In team news, Dylan Edwards, Stephen Crichton and Viliame Kikau all return from a rest. Daine Laurie, Matt Burton and Spencer Leniu drop out, with Tyrone May and Kurt Capewell moving to the bench.
Running into last Friday night, the Roosters were heavily backed to win the competition. What followed can scarcely be believed. Even at half time, I believed they would fight back. How wrong was I?
There’s no doubt the Roosters have been embarrassed by the loss and that they will be much better this weekend, but the aura has left them. James Tedesco and Luke Keary will be hoping their forward pack is dominant against the Panthers.
Brett Morris, Joey Manu, Isaac Liu and Lindsay Collins all return. However, in a blow to the Roosters, Jake Friend is out after a concussion last weekend. Freddy Lussick is at hooker with Angus Crichton starting from the bench. Mitch Aubusson, Nat Butcher, Poasa Faamausili and Matt Ikuvalu all drop out of the 17.
Prediction
Much has been made of the Panthers winning streak and whether they were better off losing a game in the lead up to the finals.
I guess we will find out tonight, but I don’t think it will impact them at all.
This is a young team playing consistently great football and, at home, they will get the win.
