The NRL semi-finals get underway with the understrength Manly Sea Eagles heading to Homebush for a clash with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).

The Sea Eagles have been the success story of the season, and now have a chance – a very good one – of advancing to the preliminary finals.

Manly might be the underdogs heading into this semi-final, but they have been so many times this year and come away with the victory.

That was the case last week when they took on the Cronulla Sharks in an elimination final, coming away with the win after getting a fast start. They led the match 18-0 at one point and never looked back, playing an impressive brand of footy despite being without Tom Trbojevic and Martin Taupau among a host of other stars.

They get Taupau back for this game after his suspension, but are still understrength and will need to be at their best.

Still, with rain around Sydney and likely damp conditions underfoot, it could suit Manly, who look to play a slightly conservative style on the back of Addin Fonua-Blake and Martin Taupau.

It’s those same conditions which could bring the Rabbitohs undone. For a side who finished in third place at the end of the regular season, they have barely played anywhere near their best.

Sloppy errors have been one of the big issues and were again last week as they were towelled up by the Sydney Roosters in the qualifying final at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

They to get players back this week with Sam Burgess and Dane Gagai returning, but there is no guarantee that actually improves a side who have to play a fast, direct style and be happy to take risks through stars like Damien Cook and Cody Walker.

It’s that duo who need to be at the top of their game if they are going to break a stringent Manly defensive line, who had the fifth-best record at the end of the regular season.

The Rabbitohs also will be turning to Adam Reynolds, in what will be a fascinating battle of the kicking games as he takes on Daly Cherry-Evans.

Prediction
This is going to be an intriguing contest. There isn’t much to split the two sides, but confidence and momentum can do funny things to a footy side.

Addin Fonua-Blake and Martin Taupau need to start well so Manly can play from in front, but I’ll take the Sea Eagles.

Sea Eagles by 2.
