Match preview:

The Melbourne Storm will attempt to extend one of the greatest NRL win-loss records when a top four clash against the South Sydney Rabbitohs heads to the Central Coast on Sunday. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4:05pm (AEST).

The Storm, since being brought into the NRL just over 20 years ago, have won a staggering 25 of 30 matches against the Rabbitohs, and appear primed to continue that record.

Craig Bellamy’s side have been a class act in 2019, and are currently running away at the top of the table, seemingly with the minor premiership already locked up.

It won’t be all smooth sailing though. Wayne Bennett’s Rabbitohs may have been stuttering, but they will have marked this down as a key match to start getting their conditioning and preparation right ahead of knockout footy in September.

This is a critical game for more than just preparation though. Souths find themselves on the edge of a top four, and a loss could see them bundled out of it by the end of the weekend, and given their form, it’s doubtful whether they can overcome a tough run home to get back into it.

They are boosted by Sam Burgess beating his judiciary hearing for a high tackle on Matt Moylan in last week’s loss to Cronulla, but it’s more than the forwards who will need to turn their game around in Gosford.

South Sydney have been a rabble in attack recently. Frankly, they look lost with little direction around the park, and while some scrappy wins over weak opposition kept them swimming into the top four, they had their pants pulled down in the Shire last week.

If they are to turn in a similar performance this time around and the Storm are anywhere near their best, things could get ugly.

Melbourne are the benchmark of this competiton. They might have lost to Manly a fortnight ago, but their third loss of the season seemed to wake them up, because they went to Brisbane last week and returned 40-4 winners.

The forwards have been consistent in dominating the middle, and it’s the way they are able to maintain the rage for the entire 80 minutes which should have every other side worried, with Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Jesse Bromwich backed up by the likes of Brandon Smith and Tui Kamikamica.

The Storm, on average, score points once every 11 tackles in their opposition 20, so it’s hardly a surprise to see their attack so potent on the back of the forward pack.

The loss of Christian Welch hurts, but they still enter every game they play as favourites.

Prediction
Souths should improve, but it’s hard to see them knocking over the benchmark.

Storm by 8.
