Round 24 of the NRL continues tonight when the South Sydney Rabbitohs face off against the North Queensland Cowboys at Accor Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:35pm (AEST).

We are lucky enough this weekend to have a number of semi-final previews. This game is one of them and it’s also vitally important for both teams. Lose and the prospect of a home semi-final will likely drift away.

The Rabbitohs, along with the Roosters, have been the big improvers since the end of Origin. They were with Penrith last start all the way to the 78th minute, when Liam Martin broke the deadlock. It clearly could have gone either way and will only provide Souths with more reason to bounce back tonight.

Much has been made of Latrell Mitchell’s return, and rightly so. He has made a big difference to the Rabbitohs’ performance week to week. However, we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of Cameron Murray and Damien Cook, both creating plenty of speed around the ruck.

Winger Jaxson Paulo has been left out of the side, with Izaac Thompson taking his place. Thomas Burgess returns from injury, with Daniel Suluka-Fifita moving out of the 17. Kodi Nikorima also wins a bench spot returning from injury, with Taane Milne missing out.

After a flat performance against the Roosters a fortnight ago, perhaps understandable in the circumstances, the Cowboys showed their premiership credentials last round with a 48-4 win over the Warriors.

Their second spot on the premiership ladder has been established by a steady set of halves, a strong pack and an exciting backline. There is no weakness.

In a substantial blow, Tom Dearden is out with injury and his place at halfback is taken by Scott Drinkwater. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow moves from the bench to fullback and Tom Gilbert joins the bench.

Prediction

There’s no doubt both sides will put it all on the line tonight.

Whilst they are enjoying a great season, the Cowboys’ win-loss record in Sydney is still a weakness.

The Rabbitohs continue to build week to week and I think they will get home in a tight one.

Rabbitohs by 2.
