11th placed St George Illawarra host eighth-placed Manly Sea Eagles as the chase for a place in the top eight continues in round 19 of the NRL. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6pm AEST.

While there’s little between the teams on the ladder, this is a crunch game for the Dragons. After back-to-back defeats, including a disastrous 26-54 thrashing against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday, their finals hopes are on life support.

All the other contenders have superior points differentials, and they’re all in better form. The Dragons simply cannot afford to drop points against a near rival, or anybody else for that matter. Lose tonight and their finals hopes are surely dashed.

While Manly’s need is not as acute, it is pressing. A resurgent Roosters team is breathing down their necks and they play those Roosters at Brookvale next weekend. Manly needs to maintain a buffer tonight as well as eliminating a rival.

The Sea Eagles have been prolific point-scorers in recent weeks, racking up 178 points in their last five games at an average of just over 35 per game. Over the same period, the Dragons have conceded just under 28 points per game. They’re the fifth-worst team overall in terms of points conceded and by far the worst regarding missed tackles and conceding line breaks.

The Dragons victories in 2022 have mostly been tight, low-scoring affairs, but it’s hard to imagine that being the case tonight.

In Dragons news, head coach Anthony Griffin remains in situ and, with Moses Suli injured, he’s selected Moses Mbye to start in the centres and added Jayden Sullivan to the bench. Tariq Sims returns from suspension to replace Aaron Woods.

Manly are without Jake Trbojevic who’s isolating due to COVID-19. Toafofoa Sipley comes into the starting team at lock with Taniela Paseka added to the bench.

Prediction

With a wet weekend forecast in Sydney, a tight low-scoring affair is not out of the question. If the Dragons can drag Manly down to their level and keep them down, they’re a chance.

But it’s hard to imagine Manly not scoring at least three or four tries and it’s equally hard to imagine the Dragons scoring more, especially without Moses Suli.

Manly by 12.
