The State of Origin series goes on the line tonight when New South Wales takes on Queensland at Optus Stadium in Perth for Game 2. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7.50pm AEST.

Game 1 in Sydney had a “back to the future” feel about it, with the Blues on the end of a good old-fashioned Maroons ambush.

Billy Slater’s side’s line speed was much faster, with NSW more rattled as the game went on. James Tedesco tried every trick in the book but Queensland’s 16-10 victory was clearly deserved.

On the back of a dominant forward pack led by the likes of Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Pat Carrigan, the Queensland halves had time. Daly Cherry-Evans had his best Origin game in years and Cameron Munster was in everything.

Coach Brad Fittler has made plenty of changes to the Blues roster. Matt Burton comes into the squad to replace Jack Wighton, out due to Covid protocols. Jake Trbojevic and Angus Crichton both come back into the Origin line up, tasked with the job of evening up the ruck contest.

In a surprise, Api Koroisau has been named at starting hooker, with Damien Cook moving back to the bench. Siosifa Talakai gets a spot on the interchange whilst Nicho Hynes bides his time in the 18 jersey.

Queensland’s two changes have been dictated by injury. Jai Arrow comes in for the impressive Reuben Cotter who injured his hamstring in the pre-game warm-up at Manly.

Xavier Coates suffered an ankle injury in the first game and he will be replaced by Cowboys winger Murray Taulagi. Taulagi’s combination with Valentine Holmes will be causing headaches for the Blues defence.

Prediction

I’m a Blues fan and it hurts me to say this.

The changes by Brad Fittler looks like moves of desperation, and I think his fear is well grounded.

Queensland were the better team in Game 1 and, with a short camp this time around, I think the Maroons will be too strong again.
